Last weekend my friend Zed Marty and I met at his studio and did a comparison of the very affordable Klark Teknik KT-2A with my self made P2P LA2A. Of course we also talked a little bit about the design of the LA2A and the internals and components of the DIY version. I always wanted to know how the Klark KT-2A actually sounds like and if and how it holds up to more expensive versions of the LA2A. Here are some answers to these questions.
As I mention in the video my impression is that the DIY is a little more 3D and open sounding. For some reason it also has more gain reduction available (look at the Peak Reduction settings). What also makes a difference is the type of Opto-Cell used. You can see that in Limiting-Mode when looking at how the needles dance. Of course the Opto-Cell plays an important role here as it defines the attack and release behavior.
I hope you like the comparison and would be grateful to hear your opinions.
